Covent Garden Will be Illuminated by Thousands of Balloons
From August 27th till September 27th, London’s Covent Garden will be beautifully illuminated by 100,000 white balloons, as French artist Charles Pétillon displays his first public art installation. As well as this being his first showcase of his art, it will be his first outside of France. The art piece is created by 100,00 balloons grouped together that are each of a different dimension. The Covent Garden display will fill the interior of the 19th Century Market Building. It stretches out to 54 meters in length and 12 meters in width. The balloons feature a slow pulsing light which represents a heartbeat. The symbolism of the pulsating light is reflective of the beating heartbeats of the people who create the energy and dynamism of the area.
In reference to his art piece Charles Pétillon said: “The balloon invasions I create are metaphors. Their goal is to change the way in which we see the things we live alongside each day without really noticing them. With Heartbeat I wanted to represent the Market Building as the beating heart of this area – connecting its past with the present day to allow visitors to re-examine its role at the heart of London’s life…Each balloon has its own dimensions and yet is part of a giant but fragile composition that creates a floating cloud above the energy of the market below”
Make sure you pay a visit to Covent Garden to witness this spectacular piece of art that encapsulates a dynamic and energetic culture.
