Garage and bassline production duo Distant Light hit the music landscape last year with their official remix of UK R&B singer Angel’s chart-topping track ‘Wonderful’. The garage number quickly got the stamp of approval from leading tastemakers DJ EZ from Kiss FM and BBC 1Xtra’s DJ Cameo. The duo’s remix of Alpines ‘No Other Lover’ was also snapped up by Clash and further supported by Pitchfork gaining them further success and a larger mainstream audience.
Distant Light, aka Dave Wilson and Sammy Stabile, have taken a slightly different path on their latest single ‘Raggamuffin’. The sturdy low-end bounce is still there alongside the crisp hi-hats, but to that they’ve added some jump-up vocals from Jamaican reggae singer, Conkarah. The tightly-wound rhythm section and choppy chords provide a sturdy framework for Distant Light to anchor Conkarah‘s soaring, fluid vocals. It’s a neat, surprisingly unique pairing of UKG and dancehall, and one we’d love to hear more of in the future. It comes at a perfect time as well the summer sun shining and Notting Hill Carnival just around the corner. Definitely a track to blast out of your speakers this August and beyond!
