While Bonkaz has been very generous in delivering new material though his Soundcloud page, whether that be girl tunes, experimental material or reflective songs, we were yet to hear the follow up single to his summer smash ‘We Run The Block‘ from the Forgive Me When I’m Famous EP. But while he shuts down shows, headlining Pigeons & Planes debut No Ceilings UK show last week, it seems as if the Croydon rapper has delivered the goods in the form of ‘You Don’t Know’
The track was premiered by none other then Mistajam on BBC 1Xtra last night and is definitely a switch in gears for Bonkaz. The up tempo and bass heavy track, produced by Sonny Reeves & Splurgeboys, is a catchy and repetitively effective shot with rapidfire verses from Bonkaz and a chorus that keeps on giving. The track also features a sample of the Dizzee Rascal hit ‘Bonkers‘ [of course!] from his 2009 project Tounge n’ Cheek. While the production could easily drown out many MCs, Bonkaz holds his own on ‘You Don’t Know’, talking about his upbringing, where he comes from and his early influences in music; “Grew up on Kano, grew up on Dizzee, More Fire Crew not ‘Pac and Biggie”.
“This song is both an introduction to me and an example of me having fun with the music. A well known sample that coincidentally has my name in it, it was a no-brainer for me, especially as I grew up on Dizzee Rascal…With this record I feel I was able to keep my rawness and the flows but also have a fun record that’s very accessible.”
The video has just dropped and sees Bonkaz strutting his stuff in a lot of vibrant and colourful settings, matching the official artwork and all ‘feel good’ vibe of the song. When talking about the making of video, Bonkaz said “The video was really fun, creative and different from anything I’ve done before. It’s in your face, colourful, fresh and I am excited to see the response from people – I’m hoping everyone enjoys it as much as I did making it!”
