Beautiful soul artist Eska recorded a Maida Vale live session for Jamie Cullum‘s Radio 2 show with the first song being ‘This is How a Garden Grows’ and it’s truly mesmerising. Eska possesses true talent in her vocals and the adventurous sounds she can create vary immensely – which she experiments with towards the end of the song. ‘This is How a Garden Grows’ is extremely soulful. It begins with simplicity in the drums, guitar, vocals and piano but builds up to become an expression of real fire and emotion.
The piano is played by Eska herself and timpani mallets are used on the drum kit to create muffled sounds which smoothly accompany the main focus which is her voice. Eska‘s powerful vocals fill the large open recording space effortlessly and create a feeling of warmth, making me really want to see how she makes a venue her own when performing live.
She has live dates approaching this month and onwards in Birmingham, London, Milton Keynes and Norwich:
18th November Midlands Art Centre, Birmingham, UK
26th November The Stables, Milton Keynes, UK
27th November Islington Assembly Hall, London, UK
28th November Norwich Arts Centre, Norwich, UK
Eskas self-titled debut album was released back in April and has received high acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson, The Guardian and The Observer – who complimented her album by calling it a ‘mind-bending gem’. Eska is a creative talent who is a songwriter alongside being a musician. Her album took 5 years to complete, but this time makes it a piece of real beauty so well worth the wait. She spoke to Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6Music on the 16th of October and described the recording process as “really exciting, really thrilling, but also challenging and scary”.
