In a year that has seen grime dominate the UK airwaves, it’s great to hear that UK R&B is still alive. One such act flying the flag for UK R&B is London’s very own Etta Bond. Since becoming the first signing to Labrinth‘s Odd Child Music in 2011 thanks in part to her growing fan base on MySpace, she has worked with and collaborated with the likes of Wretch 32 [‘Forgiveness‘], Plan B [‘Playing With Fire‘ feat. Labrinth], Devlin [‘Love Cards‘] and Skepta [‘Mastermind‘]. Most recently, Etta Bond teamed up with Bonkaz for his track ‘Young Hearts‘ off his new EP Forgive Me When I’m Famous.
In the last few years, she has been more experimental in her music and her latest tracks ‘18‘ and ‘Seen And Never Heard‘ have put her in the spotlight for their originality and freshness, both through her music and accompanying visuals. This week saw Bond team up with good friend and regular collaborator Raf Riley for new track ‘Never Did‘. Raf and Etta have previously worked on two projects; Emergency Room in 2012 and Meds in 2013 which have featured stand out tracks ‘Boring Bitches‘ [feat. Lady Leshurr] and ‘Loophole‘. With such a proven success method, its hard to see how this track isn’t a smash hit.
For ‘Never Did‘, the duo combine forces with South London rapper A2, who was featured on GRM Daily as part of their #NextGen10 series and worked with Krept & Konan for his track ‘Flowers X Patron‘. The soulful and melodic track has strong old school influences while Etta Bond’s distinct tone and A2’s lyrics gives the song that unique UK swagger.
