Hedi Slimane on behalf of Saint Laurent AW 16/17 gave nineties grunge the middle finger and slayed with eccentric eighties chic. It was believed to be the final show for the prolific fashion house, a half showing of both male and female autumn collection at the Hollywood Palladium and then finishing at Paris Fashion Week. Changing from the usual booklet format for their invitation, Slimane opted for beautifully embossed cards. The normal venue aesthetic of modern minimal and high tech was exchanged for the grandeur of a 17th century chateau. Models weren’t accompanied by indie rock or heavy bass soundtrack, but a women announcing the look number in both French and English. Back to basics…

Reverting back to ‘archival by night’, the opening number bubbling blouses, fuchsia cat suits and a rather gothic looking dress. Naturally, the exquisite tailoring that is now synonymous with the brand made an appearance. Whilst a chic leather jacket is worthy of note, the ‘cocktail shaker’ was the real show stopper. The question remains, who will be the first to wear it? The Saint Laurent race is on.
