Okay Kaya Uses Pokémon Go in the Video for ‘Keep On Pushin”
New York-based Norwegian artist Okay Kaya has demonstrated her handle of space and sound on ethereal tracks like ‘Damn, Gravity‘ and ‘Clenched Teeth‘. Today, she impresses again, showcasing her ability to take an esteemed piece of musical history and transform it into her own creation with ‘Keep On Pushin”, a dreamy rendition of the 1964 hit by Chicago gospel group Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions. It’s busy, filled with chopped up flute and synth lines which tangle with slow bass and drums, while Kaya’s vocals are harmonised to the max. She goes from sounding fractured to all-conquering, often in the same line, throwing in some jaw-dropping falsetto whenever it suits her. Producer Adult Jazz’s soulful reduction acts as the final touch in recreating the magic.
“‘Keep On Pushing’ was the first time I heard Curtis Mayfield’s voice,” Okay Kaya told The FADER. “He continues to enlighten me time and time again with his supernatural way of expressing emotions. This tune has kind of become my own personal anthem of healing and progress in violent times.” The track will be feature on her forthcoming 7” with Norwegian record label Smalltown Supersound.
The video sees Okay Kaya playing Pokémon Go walking across New York’s crosswalks and under its bridges as she sings alongside all manner of beasts. The Curtis Mayfield cover is one of Kaya’s recent crown jewels, and the fantastical video is just what it needed.
