In the space of eighteen months, New Gen has evolved from a group of like-minded artists to a club night, Radar Radio show and now a compilation on XL. Following teasers during the Rated Awards, a New Gen billboard poster emerged in East London this week with new faces of those appearing on the project – WSTRN, AJ Tracey, Bonkaz, Renz, Avelino, Tiggs Da Author, Ray BLK, TE dness, J Warner, Jevon, Stefflon Don, Abra Cadabra, Yxng Bane, Kojey Radical, 67, A2 & Dotty – being added on each day.
With a number a notable artists working in the same studio, the result is an album “anchored in the half space between trap, grime and new wave R&B, the melting pot which has typically come to represent the New Gen sound,” the label explains. It’s the brainchild of creative director Caroline SM, who also works as an A&R at XL. Speaking in a press release about her vision for the New Gen albums she says;
“We went into the album with the same principles as we did with everything else. How do we give people that ‘What the fuck’ factor? Like, how did they make a musical, original, cohesive body of work with 17 completely different artists? That’s really the point of New Gen, we have to push the boundaries”
And we finally have some music to listen from it as Mistajam premiered the lead single on the radio last night. ‘Ring The Alarm’ is a song featuring the bars of Avelino together with the reggae-tinged vocals of Tiggs Da Author, and the music video unveiled today sees the pair paying tribute to The Mangrove restaurant in Notting Hill that served as a meeting place for civil rights activists and Carnival organisers in the 1970s and 80s before its closure.
