Jamaican dancehall and Nigerian afrobeats are like long-lost musical cousins. They’re not identical twins, despite what mainstream radio thinks, with their tendency to lump the two genres together into one all encompassing “foreign and black” category. They might have you believe they’re one and the same, however many artists are coming to the forefront now with a distinguished influence from both cultures. Perhaps, the two share some DNA. It was only a matter of time before some of afrobeats and dancehall’s biggest stars were formally introduced through a collaboration, the only complaint here is that it didn’t happen sooner.
