Kanye West’s YEEZY Season 6 Campaign Could Be Illegal
The latest YEEZY campaign for Season 6 may just get Kanye in some trouble, even after being praised for his creativity and genius. If you aren’t aware of what the campaign is, here’s a brief run-through.
Several models and stars – one of which being Paris Hilton – took part in a Kim K lookalike campaign where, they would imitate her hair and recognisable style, wearing YEEZY Season 6 apparel. This was put together alongside a paparazzi-style photographed lookbook, available to see here along with the new women’s line.
Although, inventive and creative, according to The Fashion Law, this style of marketing is actually recognised as potentially being illegal. This is due to FTC laws which roughly states that a party should fully disclose adverts or sponsored content to the public.
Similar regulation from the same body also outlines things such as -“if you’re paid to promote a product on Instagram, you must state that on your post”. If deemed to be deceptive, FTC recognises the campaign or ad as breaking the law, unintentionally or otherwise. A deceptive campaign is understood as an ad where the “significant minority” of consumers can’t tell, which is the reason many Instagrammers hashtag the word “ad” unless ‘blatant’ or ‘obvious’.
