Nike x OFF-WHITE “Football, Mon Amour” SS18 Collection
Virgil Abloh now revisits his youth for the “Football, Mon Amour” apparel collaboration. This delivery arrives just in time for the world cup, drawing inspiration from the designer’s adolescent years listening to hip-hop on the way to high school matches. This clear love for the sport is shown in his latest collection, blending his premium streetwear aesthetic with sports functionality on lifestyle silhouettes.
The Netherlands iconic lion crest is applied to the chest of each zip through jacket or polo shirt, with familiar orange print and off-white detailing throughout. Abloh also borrows from Croatia‘s famous checks, amongst other elements of football kit designs. Always going for bold tones though, Virgil tells Nike:
“The great thing about the vocabulary and history of football is that aesthetically it has its own look. I was always inspired by the way European teams have a sponsor printed over the chest. When I was working on this collection, I wanted to celebrate the different variants of typography,”
Virgil decided on the numbers by thinking back to the jerseys the man himself used to wear during his playing years. His chosen pair for the delivery is the Flyknit Zoom Fly, which pays homage to early versions of the Nike Mecurial. Explaining his thought process behind designing the shoes, the Louis Vuitton menswear director details:
“I wanted to communicate where a player strikes the ball. So, I put dots on the boot; if you’re going to strike the ball, your foot/eye coordination is basically the only variance of chance. That’s what the collection started with, these running shoes that mimic the same as your actual boot on the pitch so that you started subconsciously training all the time. Then I just applied that aesthetic from the bottom up,”
