Since the release of her global hit, “BooUp“, British singer Ella Mai has been relevant and on the rise. Her latest gold single “Trip” is also making rounds, contributing towards the excitement around her debut.

Signed to DJ Mustard at 10 Summers, the London-born singer-songwriter appears to be one of many artists attempting to reclaim R&B’s traditional sound. Inspired heavily by Chris Brown, who features on the record “Whatchamcallit“, the budding talent has taken the States by storm.

Reviews so far are mostly positive: Pitchfork has labeled the tape – “a perfectly fine debut from the London R&B singer” – with The Guardian saying she has – “lyrical assuredness and Janet Jackson-style sexiness” – but calls the project – “a missed oppurutnity“.

Her success alone has opened up a much larger conversation in the UK, about an accused lack of support for British born R&B artists.

Also featuring John Legend and H.E.R, Ella Mai‘s self titled debut stands at a strong 16 tracks, with other big single “Naked”  included as a bonus.
