Inciting some controversy among readers, GQ Magazine unveiled its latest “Man & Woman of the Year” covers for 2018.
Featuring Michael B Jordan, Jonah Hill, Henry Golding and Serena Williams, the drama arose due to Virgil Abloh‘s hand-drawn contribution to Serena’s cover. Being the only woman to appear on the front of the men’s magazine’s series, Abloh crosses out the word men, then adds “Woman” in quotation marks. Not only is this a reference to their collaboration, and to Virgil’s signature aesthetic, but some believe it’s offensive due to existing issues around people’s opinion of the athlete’s beauty.
Those both aware, and unaware of work from the Louis Vuitton Head of Menswear, voiced opinions on social media – namely Twitter and Instagram. Hitting store shelves in December, check out the cover in question above or all of the others below. GQ currently haven’t added Serena’s cover to their Instagram.
