Gucci Withdraws Polo Neck Sweater After Blackface Comparisons

Gucci has withdrawn their Polo Neck Sweater from their Fall/Winter 2018 collection due to a severe social media backlash, with many calling it racist and belittling blackface symbolism.

Described as a “balaclava” knit, the sweater has a black knit finish extends over the lower part of the face where it features a cut-out around the mouth and red “lip” detailing. As a result of the backlash, the brand posted an apology statement to their Twitter profile.

Prada recently found itself in a similar position to Gucci. At the tail end of 2018, the brand’s Pradamalia series released two monkey-like creature keyrings. One keychain bears a dark, wooden body and red lips. Civil rights lawyer,  Chinyere Ezie described it as, “racist and denigrating #blackface imagery.” In response, Prada issued a product recall and a public apology.

Take a look at some of the backlash directed towards the Italian fashion brand and their official statement below.
