Is Dave’s Debut “Psychodrama” – Album Of The Year?
Aged 20, Streatham born rapper Dave released his debut studio album “Psychodrama” on 8th March. After his two successful EP’s “Six Paths” and “Game Over” which included a feature from MoStack and a remix from Drake, it’s been a long wait for his fans.
Dave isn’t your average grime artist with his known storytelling and incredible lyricism, not forgetting his piano skills. “Psychodrama” consists of 11 tracks and the album itself is produced by Dave himself. It contains features from J Hus, Burna Boy, and Ruelle, an American electronic pop singer/songwriter.
With such context, the album went straight to number one on the UK Albums Chart within days. The concept album focusses on the mental mindset of the rapper. He delves into his issues with depression, relationships, domestic abuse and racial inequality. These are three different themes that form the masterpiece.
It’s clear to see that Dave hasn’t held anything back. An example of this is “Lesley“, which gave listeners an insight into life for people in an abusive relationship. “Black” is a powerful message of black identity and excellence, however, he also covers the issues of racial and social inequality.
These complex themes are explored with great technical skill, but more importantly, with great care and intelligent commentary. Not only does this album create fantastic dialogue, but it also shows that Dave deserves to be at the forefront of UK rap.
Moreover, on February 25thDave announced “Psychodrama: The Tour”, which sold out in four cities on the same day the tickets went live. This further demonstrates his impact at such a young age. Looking towards the future, who knows what he’ll bring to the table next time around.
